The Location

Onyria Quinta Da Marinha VIllas are nestled within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.  Within a 5 minute drive, you’ll be staring at the rugged coast and watching the untamed waves crash on Portugal’s unique Atlantic ocean edge.  It’s easy to get to the busy center of Cascais, enjoy fine dining, shopping, beaches, and still venture towards Lisbon or Sintra for sightseeing and exploration.

Not to be confused with its sister property, Onyria Quinta Da Marinha hotel which is a 5-star hotel offering various rooms and on site amenities.  You still have access to those amenities but are afforded a private retreat with the comforts of home.

Getting to the Villas

This is a perfect stop when renting a car for a self-guided road trip in Portugal.  Arrival from LIsbon airport takes about 30 minutes and is fastest on the toll road but there is an alternate no toll route that only takes a few minutes longer depending on the time of day.

Arrival is achievable via public transport but could require several transfers between train and bus and take up to 2.5 hours.  Rideshare is available through Uber and Bolt but could add up unless you consider their food shopping service available.

One of the closest Cascais attractions would be the Guia Lighthouse which would take 5 minutes by car and at least 30 minutes walking.

When checking in, you will need to go to the hotel location.  They will direct you on getting to your villa.  Walking to the villa is not the most pedestrian friendly path and can take 15 – 20 minutes.  If ordering food delivery at night from outside of the hotel restaurant, it may be highly difficult for them to find your unit without you meeting them outside or giving very specific instructions.

My Stay – Service, Dining, Activities, & Value

Why Onyria Quinta da Marinha Villas?

If you’re searching for a villa in Cascais, Portugal for your trip, it could be due to a desire for privacy or because you are traveling as a larger family.  Maybe you’re like us and you want both.  It’s not that the kids are loud but it is definitely less stressful not having to worry too much about whether they are making too much noise because someone might be trying to sleep beneath you.

We chose Onyria Cascais for all of those reasons plus the beautiful aesthetics and positive reviews helped our decision.  A bonus was that we could use points to pay for our stay as well.  If you are not familiar with point stays, now is a great time to learn more about them.

There are several different banks and credit cards that offer travel rewards for the money you spend with them.  Planning out how to spend those points is where you get your best value.  Some people spend points on Amazon, some use it for experiences, others use theirs for gift cards.  We love to use ours to make family travel more affordable.

Check-In

Within 10 minutes of checking in, we were parked and walking to our villa at the end.  Our stay was prepaid with points so check-in only required a security hold for on-site expenses.

There was limited parking available so this could be difficult during a high volume stay.  The grounds are very natural in their state and therefore, somewhat rustic and could be difficult terrain for wheelchair accessibility. During a rainy stay, these paths will also become pretty muddy.

It can also be very dark at night.  These might be what you would expect in a country setting so it’s really not abnormal, just something to be mindful of.

Appliances

Most of the appliances were very easy to use.  The most difficult for Americans might be the oven and the washing machine.  Looking at an instructional guide and maybe a couple of Youtube searches make it much easier.  The controls are a lot like looking at an Ikea manual, it seems like the picture should make sense but somehow, something is missing.  No worries, you’ll work it out.

Nearby Markets

There are several grocery stores that you can visit for needed supplies if you choose not to use the concierge shopping service.

Spar Cascais R. dos Pinheiros, 2750-762 Cascais, Portugal

Lidl R. da Torre 831 nº, 2750-269 Cascais, Portugal

VIP Supermercados Av. Manuel Júlio Carvalho e Costa 51, 2750-424 Cascais, Portugal

Meu Super Cascais Av. Infante Dom Henrique 106 R/C, 2750-167 Cascais, Portugal

3 Things You Should Try at a Portuguese Supermarket

DIY Charcuterie ( meats, cheeses, and crackers) – expect to pay from €1.15+ for small packages

Fresh Baked Pastries especially Pastel de Nata – these Portuguese bite size custards are found everywhere for under $1 each.  It will definitely surprise you with its flaky pastry crust and sweet egg yolk filling.  Be careful, it’s just too easy to overdo it on these things!

Wine – amazing local Portuguese wines of many varieties, often less than €3 for a 750ML bottle.  Wine lovers will lose their minds, they have it all!

Living Spaces

The Living room space is very open to the outdoor terrace and kitchen area.  The sectional is comfortable and the fireplace is perfect for chilly days in the winter.

The dining space has enough seating for 6 at the table and the outdoor terrace is equipped with a large dining table as well.

The beds are very comfortable and provide a good night’s rest.

We were also greeted with bamboo toothbrushes, one was even engraved with my name.

If you’ve rented a few villas, you notice the extras that aren’t usually included and this was one of the most complete I’ve seen with everything you could need including an iron, clothes drying rack, tools for cleaning up quick messes.  It’s nice being able to reach for a tool you need instead of calling guest services to ask for a broom or cleaner.  Spills happen.

Check Out

There were no surprises at check out besides a cute little box of cookies as a thank you.  That’s the only kind of surprise we want! It was a rather uneventful stay.  We arrived, we enjoyed our time, and then we moved on to the next part of our trip.
