Family Adventures in Hurghada Egypt: 5-Star Stays and Sunny Days

Estimated read time 20 min read

How did we wind up setting our sights on visiting Hurghada, Egypt, of all places? Well, it was a happy accident but now that we know, we have to let you in on the secret.  We originally had our hearts set on a Red Sea cruise from Hurghada in November 2023 because it seemed like a great way to see Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan in the same week!  When it canceled, we adjusted our plans to stay longer and see more in Egypt.

While it is certainly a bit of engineering to get from Orlando to  Hurghada, Egypt, it is absolutely possible.  By splitting the journey up with extended layovers in London and Istanbul, globetrotting with the family becomes much more doable.

Hurghada’s allure seems to be well known to Europeans but hasn’t made it as high on the American traveler’s radar yet.  And we think it should be.  It’s a beautiful, relaxing beach resort town on Egypt’s Red Sea coast that can be the perfect base for day trips to Egypt’s most famous landmarks.

Hurghada is most popular for its thriving marine life and there’s a plethora of all-inclusive waterpark resorts and luxurious 5-star resorts dotting the coastline.  You get a family-friendly paradise with endless options that packs a whole lot more bang for your buck than the usual all-inclusive retreats that Americans flock to.

Getting to Know Hurghada Egypt

Hurghada is divided into three captivating areas, each with its own character:

  • El Dahar (the Old Town) – Where tradition meets timelessness. Wander the bustling markets and get a taste of local life.
  • Sekalla (the City Center) – The pulse of Hurghada, brimming with shops, cafes, and vibrant street life.
  • El Memsha (the Modern Part) – A contemporary haven with wide boulevards, chic restaurants, and stylish resorts.

When to Visit

  • Best Time for Families: March to May & September to November. These months offer the perfect balance for outdoor fun and comfortable beach lounging.
  • Summer (June to August): Prepare for the heat! With temperatures soaring above 35°C (95°F), it’s ideal for water babies and sun seekers.
  • Winter (December to February): Cooler days with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F), perfect for exploring without the swelter.

Exploring Beyond the Beach

Hurghada’s surroundings are a stark, yet stunning landscape of desert beauty:

  • Desert Adventures: From thrilling quad biking excursions to serene camel rides, the desert is a playground of the extraordinary. Our family’s camel trek was not just a ride, but a journey through the vast, silent beauty of the desert, offering a glimpse into the Bedouin way of life.
  • Marine Wonders: The Red Sea is a diver’s paradise, teeming with colorful coral reefs and exotic marine life. Even snorkeling off the beach can reveal a world of underwater magic, perfect for introducing little ones to the wonders of the sea.

Family-Friendly Resorts

Hurghada is home to numerous all-inclusive resorts, many with their own waterparks and kid’s clubs. We stayed at 3 popular beachfront resorts to compare and they did well in many areas.

Tips to Keep In Mind:

  • Packing Essentials: Sunscreen, hats, and comfortable walking shoes are must-haves. Don’t forget swim gear for the endless water fun. (You can find most things if you’re tyring to conserve packing space but if you need special sizes or products that may be hard to find, definitely bring those.)
  • Stay Hydrated: The Egyptian sun is no joke. Keep water bottles handy, especially during desert excursions. This may mean having extra cash to buy more than the provided bottles or requesting extras from your hotel/resort.
  • Cultural Insights: Embrace the local culture. A simple “Shukran” (thank you) can go a long way in connecting with the friendly locals.
